Skeptical of U.S. Media, People Turn to al-Jazeera

As a country that the government and its people arguing US invasion of Iraq, it seems making US media to be interested in covering how Indonesian people behaviour on perceiving the war in Iraq through mass media. Washington Post, this time by Ellen Nakashima, reporting Watching the war: a series on how people around the world are perceiving the war in Iraq through their local media. And yes you're right, Indonesian people prefer to choose al-Jazeera better than CNN. "I don't believe all that CNN reports", said Mirta Nugroho, 31, a PR manager.

Letters from the soon to be dead

Some letters collected from Baghdad high schools by the Iraq Peace Team are very touching as i quoted below, so are the others. I wish their future will not end up soon :(

Under the threatening of the American government of every day, we live and continue our daily life. We go to school, to work, visiting each other, but still we have the hope of getting over this crisis. God will help us and save our country from this war. If war will arise the coming few days, I might not be able to continue writing my own diary. We don’t know what is going to happen... We might die .. and maybe we are living our last days in life.

I hope that everyone who reads my diary remember me and know that there was an Iraqi girl who had many dreams in her life, but war has destroyed all her dreams and her dreams will never come true.

New Release: War Is Suck!

"Only dumb human did war, Evil itself did diplomacy". So, though Evil are bad, they're not dumb. They engaged in diplomacy with God to have the right to fool dumb human to do any bad things. But as stated in Shaikh 'Abdul Qadir al-Jailani's book The Secret of The Secrets (Sirr al-Asrar), God gave Evil the right to do anything to fool human, but they have no ability to make human do the bad things. Only dumb human who thwart their faith (with admission of God) will be fooled. So don't be easily fooled! May God help us. I've heard it's healthy to write letters to those you have issues with and never send them but write them as if they were reading them right now, so here's mine at it.

Dear ?????

I'm writing because there's something i've always wanted to tell you but i guess i'm too chicken to do it. We've had a great past year hanging out together as friends and i realize i have more than just friend feelings for you. May be you've got that feelings too, but i can never be sure, because the same as mine, "your word" never comes out of your mouth.

Suddenly i feel that you're now keeping your distance farther and farther from me. May be i have done some mistakes to you, or may be you have a new one to hang out with, or may be you have a big problem you don't want to discuss to anyone particularly me. So, that's fine, you have your own life and so do i. May be our close friendship is reaching its ending limit, and it's time for us to become just an ordinary friend. I will find someone who will like me for who i am and want to spend the rest of my life with that person. I know this person isn't you, and never, but it took me this long to realize it. I wish you the best in life.

Indonesia's Muslims pray for peace

Over 500,000 Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) followers turned out at the parade ground inside the Brawijaya Military Command headquarters (Makodam) in Surabaya on Sunday for the largest rally so far in the country against a possible United States attack on Iraq and also to the country's worsening political situation in the face of the 2004 general election.

Separately, still on Sunday, hundreds of Muslims from greater Jakarta, after gathered at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta to listen to a sermon by Muslim preacher Abdullah "Aa Gym" Gymnastiar, the head of the Daarut Tauhid Islamic boarding school in West Java, traveled to the U.S. embassy to hand over a letter to U.S. President George W. Bush. In that letter, Aa Gym warned the President of a further loss of credibility in the eyes of the international community if he continue to insist on forcibly disarming Iraq.

Previously, Corbuzier had recorded his prediction of yesterday's headline of a daily to an audio cassette and then kept it untouched since February 16^th 2003. Indonesian Literature Enlightened?

The new era of Indonesian young woman writers might have just started since around the last 5 years. It began by the appearance of a controversial novel Saman written by Ayu Utami (1998), because of her courage on demonstrating political repression, religion intolerance, and woman sexuality. Some pros praised her unpretend depiction on those 'taboo'-things, while some cons critisized it.

And then some other young woman writers come out from their hiding place and succesfully enliven Indonesian literature such as Fira Basuki (Trilogy Novels: Jendela-Jendela, Pintu, and Atap), Dewi 'Dee' Lestari (Supernova), Djenar Maesa Ayu (Kumpulan Cerpen: Mereka Bilang Saya Monyet), Violetta Simatupang (Kumpulan Puisi: Anak-Anak Vampir), and many more.

Megawati criticized for often using Javanese words

BOGOR, West Java (JP): A political analyst at Djuanda University here has criticized Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri for often using Javanese vocabulary in her public addresses.

I don't understand why some critics now seem so funny. I mean, just as above, why hasn't he criticized on what's the content of her (Megawati's) public speaking rather than how she done it? I'm not the-so-called fans of her policies on price hike --and I don't think anybody is--, but still i don't like to criticize as the above. As long as her audience / people understand what she's speaking, it doesn't matter anymore, right?

Kasparov Currently Leads Deep Junior by 1 Game

In 1997, Garry Kasparov, the Russian grandmaster who was then the world champion, played a chess match against the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue. He lost that match and suspected foul play. He contended that Deep Blue might have cheated, an assertion that IBM denied, by obtaining advice from human experts during the games.

And now, Kasparov is trying to beat another computer, Deep Junior. Two of six game match have been played. Kasparov convincingly won the first game, but drawn in the second game. Let's see how he'll deal the rest of them. Good luck, Mr. Kasparov!

FIFA Ranking: Indonesia Jump Up 26 Level

According to FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking published on 15 January 2003, Indonesia have made the best progress, 26 level up to 84th since last published on December 2002. Thailand, who have both fought for Tiger Cup 2002 winner's title in Jakarta, up 12 level to 54th.

No one would disclaim if event on 11 September 2001 was said as a big tragedy that killed a lot of victims. But then many pros-cons opinions came on the way how US gov responds to it. Some saw some clumsiness on this event. It includes a CNN news about a phone call from Flight 77 by Barbara Olson to her husband, US Solicitor General, Ted Olson, that's now proved untrue. Without this news, there would have been no Arab Hijackers, no Osama Bin Laden directing operations from afar, and no “War on Terror” in Afghanistan and occupied Palestine.

Tiger Cup 2002: Indonesia Goes To Final Round

Indonesia finally will go through the final round of Tiger Cup 2002 after defeating Malaysia 1 - 0 in the semi-final at the Gelora Senayan Jakarta. Indonesian striker, Bambang Pamungkas, scores the only goal in the middle of the second half finishing cross-pass from Zainal Arif.

In Sunday's final, Indonesia will meet Thailand which defeated Vietnam 4 - 0 before Indonesia's match. Will Indonesia be the winner of this event? Let's pray for that! And once again, bravo Indonesia! :)

Layla and Majnun

I have heard the fame of Layla and Majnun many times but never read it by myself. So I was happy when I found the translation of Layla and Majnun in a bookstore in Jakarta about 2 weeks ago.

This is the story of Layla, the desert beauty, and Majnun, the madman; two lovers which are separated against their will, and struggle with their fate until the story's tragic ending. The story is both entertaining and original throughout. The original literature is written by Nizami in 12th century classical Persian poem. But in this translation book, it is adapted to prose version by Dr. Colin Turner, a lecturer in Persian and Islamic studies at Durham University in the UK.

Eric Clapton fans may be interested to know that his song, Layla, was inspired by this tale.

USA Intelligence Agencies Revealed

Uruguayan EP-FA congressman Jose Bayardi says he has information that far-reaching plans have been put into operation by the CIA and other North American intelligence agencies to overthrow Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias within the next 72 hours.

Bayardi says he does not foresee any immediate foreign military intervention in the Venezuelan situation but warns of a possible escalation if the opposition gets the upper hand over constitutional law and order.

"The problem is that Venezuelan television and major newspapers have been hiding the true fact that there are huge popular uprisings in support of the Chavez Frias government ... now that Venezuelans are beginning to understand that they have been duped by the anti-government media, they are demanding that these information channels should begin to tell the truth!"

I think, manipulating the press is SOP in any campaign to destabilize/overthrow an elected leader in another country. It reminds me how Indonesian Gus Dur had finally out of his presidential in 2001 after vehemently attacked by the press.

I Want To Kiss You Once

Aku Ingin Menciummu Sekali Saja (I Want To Kiss You Once) is an excellent innovative feature film created by the Indonesian renowned director Garin Nugroho. The film features the landscape and culture of Papua (easternmost of Indonesia). "Papuan landscape and culture have not been featured in fiction thoroughly as if it's in the context of news," said Garin. The film tells about the love story between a young sixteen year old Papuan boy Arnold (Oktavianus Rysiat Muabuai) who falls in love with Kasih (Lulu Tobing), a 26 year old Javanese girl who comes to Papua to teach. He suddenly has the intention to kiss her.

"Papua is a vast terrain, rich in geopolitic aspects, yet hasn't been contained adequately in the context of cinema and television. In this film I try to surface contemporary Papuan issues related to cultural identity and human rights in the course of regional autonomy," added Garin. This film is entirely taken in Papua for twelve days, and use mostly Papuan actors and actresses. Surprisingly, according to Garin, Papuans have excellent acting capabilities (the audition gathered around 60 Papuans).

All in all, this film, planned to have launch in December 28th 2002, is a good example of innovation. It must be watched by every Indonesians who care enough about humanity in this region. One last message from Garin states "The message is that no matter what colour your skin is, we all have red blood. We are all the same... love can cross all borders of race and culture..."

What A Difference Four Years Makes

It is very interesting when we can compare the present news have been provided by Mainstream Media to the same topic they had provided couple years ago. It is very interesting when we can see that some of those 'Professional' media have produced distortions (and lies?) to their readers. For example, take a look on what the media have written about UN Weapons inspectors to Iraq in 1998 and recently, you will see some distortions there. I will quote some of it here. Israeli made C4 explosive used in Bali bombing

Police investigating the deadly bombing of a nightclub in the Indonesian island of Bali in which nearly 200 people died have found traces of plastic explosive manufactured in Israel at the site of the attack.

The discovery of the explosives suggests a sophisticated bombing operation.
Reports from the French news agency AFP say that the head of Indonesian intelligence, Hendropriyono, has disclosed that the explosive was a type known as C4, tracked to a manufacture in Israel.

Rubik's Cube is a three-dimensional puzzle object which have different colour on each side that can be scrambled in some variation ways. It offers not only a kind of puzzle game but also offers more of mental challenge for its player. I once tried to solve this scrambled cube but never find the way to do it. I'm not sure if it is the very difficult puzzle or it is the fool of me. May be that's just the fool of me :(

About two days ago, one of my friend asked me what the meaning of Blog is. And at that time i just replied her with my own definition about it, that is an abbreviation of Weblog, which is a type of website/homepage containing a journal of its owner's life or consideration. Okay, may be all of you asking or just wondering, what every Indonesian feels after the tragedy of Bali? For this situation, I could say, we're not only feeling sad. But we also feel such confused, anger, worry, sorry, condemn, horrible, and surely condole in every our deepest heart. We just have nothing to figure out, why the peacefully Indonesian island famously known as Bali, the Goddess' Island, was blew out on Saturday night. The bombing, who killed at least 182 people, include foreign tourists mostly Australian, not only attacked our last ground, but also blew out our spirit.

Pentagon: Hunt the Boeing! And test your perceptions!

As everyone knows, on 11 September, less than an hour after the attack on the World Trade Centre, an airplane collided with the Pentagon. The Associated Press first reported that a booby-trapped truck had caused the explosion. The Pentagon quickly denied this. The official US government version of events still holds. Here's a little game for you: Take a look at these photographs and try to find evidence to corroborate the official version. It's up to you to Hunt the Boeing!

Anti-Americanism in East Asia: Why?

Looking on my web statistics, it says 53 hits yesterday. Wow, that's the highest hits ever since it's lived. Most of them was driven by a MSNBC Weblog Central's article about the Bali bombing which is featuring this site along with NoFairyTale and Silver Wind in the INDOBLOGS section. I am very happy of it (highest hits), but still it's not one percent bigger than my condemnation to the actor(s) of the Bali bombing, whoever they are.

Clearly, Farid was already not a big fan of Bush or the United States, and this attack hasn’t changed his mind. He seems convinced that the Bali bombings were part of a U.S. plot to jusify an invasion of Indonesia in the name of security for the purpose of controlling its natural resources.

I also want to say that I surely don't hate neither Bush nor US nor anybodyelse personally. I am one of open-mind and moderate moslems which Indonesia has a lot of. I also don't like any extrimists whatever religion they have, as I don't like any unfairness and double standard policies applied by US.

I think it's interesting to see the definition of "anti-americanism" posted by Arif in his blog after reading article on the Jakarta Post on the above link (subject).

In this topic, I'm also interested in an adage I often heard since I was child which is posted by Dita in her blog, that "Fitnah lebih kejam dari pada pembunuhan" which means 'Fitnah (baseless accusations) is more cruel than murder'.

About Bali: Indonesia has for years been rebuffing the introduction of US troops into the region, claiming they do not have Al Qaeda terrorists to worry about. Indonesian resistance to the presence of US troops goes back to their resentment over being pressured out of East Timor by the US. So, this bombing in Bali looks like an attempt by the US to play Israel's game; set off a bomb, frame it on an enemy, then move in with military force to control a region. Indonesia is, naturally, an oil-rich region. Also, the fact that the bomb near the US embassy didn't hurt anyone is itself rather obvious.

Nia Dinata, Indonesian young movie director, has been choosen as "Best New Director" in The 47th Asia-Pacific Film Festival (APFF), in Seoul, South Korea. Nia got that award through Ca-Bau-Kan, a movie adapted from Remy Sylado's novel with the same title.

Solitaire

I, for sure, don't like being in the crowd. I love to meet people but I prefer a fewer people, say, one to ten, instead of more than that. I just feel so uncomfortable when bunch of them staring at me. I love to be in a quiet place. But you can't bet that it's the reason why I love this song.

Solitaire is a very neat song with a sad theme. I'm not pretty sure what this song exactly wants to say. I'm not sure if it's telling us about a card game, or about a person who lives in solitude, or both of them. I love this song. Here is the lyric:

Jakarta Blackout: Sabotage?

Parts of Greater Jakarta were blacked out on Thursday from around 6:00 p.m. The blackout caused traffic jams on many main streets in the capital. "Tidak Ada" in Indonesian language means something that has no existence, or nothing. So, when I found a weblog titled Tidakada.com, I imagined that this weblog should have been an Indonesian blog or at least contained about anything that have been gone or something like that. But I was wrong, although I'm interested with the content and the layout :)

Tidakada.com is apparently a weblog by a Corsican named Michel, that contained his daily ideas, opinions, rantings, and a whole lot of whatnots. What's the meaning of whatnots anyway?

And in case you don't know, Corsica is an island of France in the Mediterranean Sea north of Sardinia. Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the island, which was ceded to France by Genoa in 1768. I just knew it from Dictionary.com :D

US Still Hasn't Got The Message

A YEAR ago this month, the world stood still as it watched horrific images of America's iconic buildings on fire. Among the clichés that rolled off the tongues of pundits was that the world had changed forever.

And the world did indeed change. The US became more arrogant and went about conducting foreign policy as if nobody else existed. Combating terrorism suddenly became the most pressing issue on the world agenda. Xenophobia was legitimised as a security measure. Rogue states were invited back into the mainstream fold, so long as they threw their weight behind the "war on terrorism". And multilateral institutions such as the UN and international protocols on human rights and the conduct of war were thrown out the window as the US took charge of Planet Earth.

Whose Tragedy Is It Anyway?

Some say every American is a Sept. 11 victim. Sue Mladenik doesn't buy it.

Far from the scarred earth and public shrines, the Mladeniks had become a living link to a day that – the TV anchors promised – would Change America Forever. Sue hated it – hated not only the fact of her family's devastation, but its publicness. The way everybody suddenly seemed to know her. The way Jeff died daily on the covers of newspapers and magazines.

This latest issue should answer the common question "Why 9/11 is so important?", "Why do people say that the world will never be the same again as they eat their fast food?".

Let put it in context of the death and destruction that occurs on a daily basis. Put it in context of past events where a massive number of people have been killed. Of course 9/11 is big, but not as big as, say, the holocaust or Hiroshima. So why is it so important? I think what makes it different is that it happened to Americans. Mass media and American govt seem to manage it in a hyperbole way. I mean, look at what American govt had done after 9/11?

They (American govt) should see how they had managed other countries that made some of them did those kind of 'rebel'. Look at how they had managed to endure the slow disintegration of Bosnia. They had simply filed it, along with the events in Rwanda and Chechnya and Sierra Leone, under the rubric "Bad Things That Occur to People Who Are Not Americans." They should stop their arrogancies and stop dictating other countries to do their way, as we currently can see to Palestine and Iraq. This is strengthened by news on Detikcom and International Herald Tribune, that the world now see that U.S. policies played a significant role in that 9/11 attacks.

Memorizing 'Student Movement in Indonesia'

After waiting for more than 3 years, Tino Saroengallo, a journalist, photographer cum cameraman who ever worked in a Jakarta magazine, finally released the first Indonesian public-cinema documentary film titled Student Movement in Indonesia.

This film --formerly titled as The Army Forced Them to be Violence-- documented the student movement four years ago when they fired 'May 1998 revolution' up which dropped Suharto from presidency. The tradegy which entitled as Trisakti Tragedy and Semanggi Tragedy marked this revolution movement which characterized this main event of this documentary. Marked with the death of students, hundreds has been wounded, and also civilians, the Indonesia must remember the young people is the martyr that symbolized our existence.

It's been five years since Britain grieved over the untimely death of Princess Diana, killed in a Paris car crash at the age of 36. And now, fans and admirers of Britain's late Princess Diana are paying homage to her memory, as they mark the fifth anniversary on Saturday of her death.

At Kensington Palace, Diana's royal home in London, dozens of her supporters have been leaving sympathy cards to mark the fifth anniversary of her death. Some have placed floral bouquets in the black wrought-iron entry gate.

Tea or coffee: what’s your poison?

I'm personally drinking both of them, both of the poison. I usually drink a bottle tea Sosro after lunch, and drink coffee, usually an instant coffee in the morning or at night --or both of them. I like to drink it with the sweet taste better than insipid one. What about you, what's your poison? Before you tell me, read some of these interesting facts:

TEA

Of historical note, China is believed to be the birthplace of Tea. It was discovered in 2737 b.c. by a Chinese Emperor Shen Nung when some tea leaves accidentally blew into a pot of boiling water. [Via Sosro]

Nobody Listens To Classical Music Anymore?

Classical concert attendances have plummeted among younger people, according to a survey by the Policy Studies Institute think-tank.

So what? :) Is it something to be concerned about or is it better to simply let it go as it always has, without having to be a flavor of the month for musical consumers? Younger people might still not be interested with it because of the formality of classical concerts. May be that's why some musicians now try to combine popular music with --or performed with-- classical instruments (orchestra). In Indonesia, those kind of music seem to be delighted enough by younger listeners, such as performed by Indonesian group band Dewa, Padi, Sheila on 7, and many more. Anyway, viva music Indonesia! :)

Permanent Link is now Available

I've been using Blogger for about 4 months, but still blank of its ability to provide a permanent link to each of my posts. I really need a permanent link so when somebody link any of my post in their website, they can still see it here on the future. So, I just tried to make some script (using javascript) on my template. It's not too difficult, I just needed to exploit Blogger's tag to make my script working, and taa..daa.. It's working properly. Now, I put permanent link on the post-time below each post.
